EV Simulation and Man-in-the-Middle for AC and DC Charging at a Test Institute
A renowned test institute covers photovoltaics and many other fields. For electric mobility, it tests charge points to IEC 61851-23 with an EVCA-based system in two racks, for up to 1,000 V and 500 A.

The Configuration
- EVCA-based system in two racks, one of them for IEC 61851-23 tests
- AC and DC charging with CCS1 and CCS2 (Combo 1 and 2)
- EV simulation and man-in-the-middle, each up to 1,000 V and 500 A
- Test libraries for IEC 61851-23, IEC 61851-1, ISO 15118-4 and ISO 15118-5
One Institute, Many Test Fields
Test institutes are asked to cover a wide range of products. Our customer in this project tests photovoltaic systems and further technologies. Charging infrastructure is one part of that portfolio.
The Goal
The team wanted to test charge points in its own lab, for AC and DC charging and according to IEC 61851-23. IEC 61851-23 defines the requirements for DC charging stations. The lab needed a system that acts as the vehicle, and that can also sit between vehicle and charge point.
The System
The EVCA-based setup consists of two racks, one of them for IEC 61851-23 tests. It covers AC and DC charging with CCS1 and CCS2 (Combo 1 and 2). Its main applications are EV simulation and man-in-the-middle.
Technical Data in Short
- Man-in-the-middle: 1,000 V, 500 A
- EV simulation: 1,000 V, 500 A, with AC fault insertion
- EVSE simulation: 1,000 V, 500 A
- AC measurement: 230 V L-N (three-phase), 64 A
The maximum values result from the weakest component in each path: inlet, connector and the measurement or simulation unit involved.
Test Libraries for EVSE Testing
- IEC 61851-23
- IEC 61851-1
- ISO 15118-4
- ISO 15118-5
comframe Release 1.6.0 brings the first part of the ISO 15118-21 test library for charging stations, available from early November 2026. ISO 15118-23 is coming soon.
What This Means for a Lab
A lab with many test fields needs equipment that does not take over the whole room. Here, EV simulation, man-in-the-middle and standard-based test libraries come in two racks. AC and DC charging are covered with the same connectors, CCS1 and CCS2.
What This Means for Manufacturers
Charge point manufacturers can check their products against the standards in one lab, for AC and DC, while the institute covers their other test needs as well.
