Developing a BMS for second-life batteries

Our customer develops Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) based on second-life batteries from electric vehicles and relies on an in-house developed Battery Management System (BMS).

For the initial development and validation phase, a customer-specific Battery Cell Simulator (BCS) was implemented with 24 simulated battery cells as well as temperature, shunt, and insulation resistance (RISO) simulation. This allowed cell conditions, balancing functions, as well as fault and limit cases to be tested safely and reproducibly without relying on real batteries.

The flexible test environment supported BMS validation as the customer developed its second-life battery storage solution for the market.

Expanding test capacity as the company grows

As the company grew, the requirements for test capacity and production-related testing increased. The original setup was therefore expanded to two comprehensive BMS test systems, each featuring 132 cell BCS channels, 40 NTC/PTC channels, as well as integrated shunt and RISO simulation.
