COMPARISON. TEST SETUP
Test platform or single instruments: which fits your charging and BMS tests?
Single instruments are enough when a test needs one quantity at one operating point – an insulation resistance, an output voltage, a single cell voltage. A test platform pays off when communication and electrical behaviour must be judged together on one time base, repeated with defined faults and documented in a record someone else accepts. That is the normal case in DC charging station development, interoperability fault analysis and BMS fault injection.
Three test scenarios compared
| Scenario | With single instruments | With a comemso test platform | Where single instruments are enough |
|---|---|---|---|
| DC charging station: safety reactions and charging communication | A DC source or load, an oscilloscope, a protocol sniffer and a vehicle-side communication stack built in-house. Each device has its own time base; scripts and merged results are maintained per test. | EVCA Flex simulates the vehicle, provokes defined faults and records messages and electrical values on one time base. Test Libraries in comframe map the executed cases to the requirements and produce the verdict record. | A single quantity at a fixed operating point, such as output voltage accuracy or insulation resistance. |
| Interoperability fault between a real vehicle and a real station | An oscilloscope on the control pilot, a PLC sniffer and a data logger, aligned by hand. The fault often disappears before the setup is complete. | EVCA Interop records the real pair on one timeline and shows the first deviation; in one case, a manufacturer’s seven-month search ended after about three minutes of analysis. Charge Playback reproduces the recorded partner in the lab. | When the cause is clearly mechanical or electrical and visible in one measurement. |
| BMS fault injection | Real cells or one laboratory supply per cell, plus manual sensor emulation. Faults such as open wires or reversed polarity are risky or impossible with real cells. | The Battery Cell Simulator sets 12 to 300 cells independently (0.1 to 8 V per cell, up to 1,500 V in series) and injects wire breaks, shorts and polarity reversal on any channel; comframe automates the sequences. | Characterising one cell or a few channels without fault cases. |
Six criteria for the decision
| Criterion | Single instruments | Test platform |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Several devices, wiring and triggers set up per test. | One system per test role, saved as a configuration. |
| Time base | One per device; aligned by hand or by script. | Communication, states and measurements in one record. |
| Repeatability | Depends on the operator and the scripts. | Saved configurations and sequences repeat the same case. |
| Faults | Limited to what each device can do directly. | Defined faults on the configured interfaces. |
| Test record | Results merged from several files. | One report per test with configuration, edition and verdict. |
| New standard editions | Scripts and evaluation rewritten in-house. | New or updated Test Libraries arrive with comframe releases, such as the ISO 15118-21 library in release 1.6.0. |
Costs over three years depend on the configuration and on how much integration work your team does itself: devices, fixtures and synchronisation, plus the upkeep of the test logic for each standard edition. We quote the platform for your test task, so the comparison runs on your numbers.
When single instruments are the better choice
- One quantity at a time. The test needs a single value at a fixed operating point and no communication.
- No repetition with faults. The result does not have to be repeated later with the same defined fault.
- No shared record. Nobody outside the lab has to accept the result as a test record.
- Characterisation, not validation. Cell chemistry, capacity or ageing belong in a cell-test setup, not in a BMS simulator.
Questions about this comparison
Can existing instruments be combined with a comemso system?
Yes, where the released interfaces allow it. comframe offers a REST API for approved workflows; project-specific adapters are added only where the standard interface does not cover the boundary.
Does a test platform replace certification?
No. Certification follows the certification body’s own process. A test platform produces development and pre-compliance records that name configuration, edition and verdict.
When should I stay with single instruments?
When the test needs one quantity at a time, involves no charging communication and does not have to be repeated with defined faults.
How do I find the right configuration?
Use the Product Finder or describe your test task. In a 15-minute demo, an engineer shows your test case on a real system.
