COMPARISON. FIELD TESTING
DC fast charger tester or installation tester with adapter: what each can show
An installation tester with an EV test adapter covers the protective-measure checks of an AC charging point and simulates the vehicle states on the control pilot. It cannot start a DC charging session: that needs high-level communication (DIN 70121 or ISO 15118) and a load. Easy Chester Ultimate does both on AC and DC chargers – it charges like a vehicle, runs the safety checks and documents every result in one report.
Installation tester with adapter and Easy Chester Ultimate side by side
| Criterion | Installation tester + EV test adapter | Easy Chester Ultimate |
|---|---|---|
| Protective measures at an AC charging point | Yes – the core task of the installation tester. | Yes, grid- and vehicle-side safety checks (option). |
| AC charging function | Control-pilot states and basic vehicle behaviour via the adapter. | Charges like a vehicle; checks charging function and communication. |
| DC fast charger | No DC charging session. | DC session with real charging current: test load up to 30 kW / 90 A per unit, 60 kW / 180 A with two units cascaded. |
| Charging communication | Not covered. | IEC 61851-1, SAE J1772, SAE J3400, DIN 70121, ISO 15118-2 with EIM (AC/DC), CHAdeMO up to 2.0; ISO 15118-20 planned for Q1/2027. |
| Fault simulation | Limited to the switches of the adapter. | Defined faults on CP, PP, PE and isolation (option). |
| Evaluation and report | Separate devices; results merged by hand. | Guided sequence and one PDF report per charger with PASSED or FAILED. |
Where the adapter is enough – and where it is not
- Enough: AC wallboxes and charging stations where the protective measures and the basic charging states must be checked, for example at the initial verification of a new installation.
- Enough: inspection scopes without DC chargers.
- Not enough: DC fast chargers – there is no charging session without high-level communication and a load.
- Not enough: a failure that depends on the charging communication, or a repeat of the same defined fault after a repair.
- AC only, one instrument: Easy Chester Micro combines the installation tester and the adapter for wallboxes and AC chargers.
Questions about this comparison
Can Easy Chester Ultimate prove the full rated power of a high-power charger?
No. Its test load reaches 30 kW per unit and 60 kW with two units cascaded. Proving full rated power needs a suitable load setup; standards-conformance tests are covered by EVCA.
Does Ultimate replace my installation tester?
For charging points, the optional safety checks cover grid- and vehicle-side protective measures in the same guided pass. Which measurements your inspection requires depends on the applicable standard and your method; compare them with the configured Ultimate options.
Is there a version for AC chargers only?
Yes. Easy Chester Micro tests wallboxes and AC chargers with one instrument instead of two.
Which charging interfaces does Ultimate support?
AC Type 1 or Type 2, CCS 1, CCS 2, NACS and CHAdeMO, by configuration.
