Why Temperature Tests for BMS?

Why do we need to focus on temperature and environmental testing?

Because the safety and reliability of battery systems are not achieved under ideal conditions — but rather under the extreme conditions they face in real-world applications.

For many years, we have been working with manufacturers and development departments to make battery management systems (BMS) safer, more precise, and more robust. In doing so, we have repeatedly found that the greatest challenges often arise where theory and reality collide.

Our experience shows that two aspects are particularly crucial:

  • Realistic simulation of environmental conditions
  • Precise validation of all relevant BMS signals.

This is precisely where the biggest challenges often arise. How does a BMS perform at -40°C after a cold winter night? How stable is its operation at +180°C over many hours? What happens during rapid temperature changes, condensation, or long cable runs in the test setup?

These questions cannot be answered using standard scenarios. They require realistic test environments, precise cell voltage and temperature simulations, and test systems that deliver reliable results even under demanding conditions.

And what does this have to do with the future of mobility? A great deal.

Modern battery systems are becoming increasingly powerful and complex. New cell chemistries, rising safety requirements, and intelligent BMS algorithms are constantly raising the bar for validation. Only through comprehensive temperature and climate testing can we ensure that battery systems function reliably, safely, and efficiently in real-world applications.

That is why we must focus on these issues and share our knowledge within the electric mobility industry. Because regardless of the technologies we develop or the markets we operate in, we all pursue the same goal: safe battery systems, reliable electric mobility, and a sustainable future for coming generations. 🌱

In our white paper, you’ll learn what requirements modern BMS tests must meet in the temperature range from -40°C to +180°C and which technical solutions have proven themselves in demanding test environments.
